Adventure Recovery Guide Certificate
AR has a unique approach to recovery coaching. Learn adventure-based counseling and recovery coaching techniques that combine experiential tools for guiding clients toward attaining their recovery goals. You will learn these techniques and practice coaching throughout the 4-month training.
The training ends with Three days and and two night camping trip to introduce fundamentals of outdoor leadership and concrete tools for coaching in an outdoor environment.
Who Should Attend:
This program is designed for people who work with clients on the substance use disorder spectrum. Combining proven techniques and skills in both outdoor leadership and recovery coaching, participants who complete the course and all necessary practice requirements will be empowered with the following knowledge and skills:
Module 1: Fundamental Outdoor Leadership Skills: 25 hrs + 20 hrs practice work
- Fire and Water
- Wilderness First Aid basics
- Reading and preparing for weather
- Basic outdoor gear and equipment
Module 2: Adventure Recovery Coaching Fundamentals: 25 hrs + 20 hrs practice work
- Storytelling and use of metaphor
- Nature as Healer
- Coaching 101
- Client empowerment
- Goal setting and tracking
Module 3: Technical Outdoor Skills Introduction: 25 hrs + 20 hrs practice work
- Mountain Biking
- Night Hiking
- Rock Climbing and Bouldering
- SUP & Kayak
- Wilderness Survival
Practicum: Skills Assessment Weekend: 25 hrs
Upon completion of above coursework, assignments and practice hours, participants will co-facilitate an outdoor weekend to demonstrate skills and role-play individual and group sessions.
The course will provide a total of 100 hours of hands-on instruction with additional practice hours between weekends. Upon completion of all modules, Participants will receive an Adventure Recovery Guide certificate. This certificate enables you to take these skills into your current role and offer these experiences to clients. You will also be eligible to facilitate Adventure Recovery programs and be featured on the AR website as a level 1 AR Guide.
$2500 paid up front for all 4 weekends and practice review.
$575 per/weekend with $500 non-refundable deposit. Total of $2800.00
Cost includes all training materials, meals and rustic lodging (technical outdoor equipment also included- a personal packing list will be provided upon registration.)
Modules will be offered once a month Friday 6:00 PM through Sunday 5:00 PM on the following weekends:
May 5-7 Module 1: Fundamental Outdoor Leadership Skills
June 2-4 Module 2: Adventure Recovery Coaching Fundamentals
July 7-9 Module 3: Technical Outdoor Skills Introduction
August 4-6 Practicum: Skills Assessment Weekend
Successful graduates will also have the opportunity to earn additional credentials and specialize their outdoor skills offerings through AR sponsored certification trainings. Adventure Recovery has partnered with the following Gold Standard instructor certification programs:
- Rock Climbing: Single Pitch Instructor Certification, American Mountain Guides Association (AMGA)
- SUP, Kayak, Canoe, Raft: Level 1-3 Instructor Certification, American Canoe Association (ACA)
- Wilderness Advanced First Aid & First Responder Certification, Wilderness Medical Association (WMA)
- Mountain Biking: Level 1-3 Instructor Certification, International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA)
- Ski and Snowboard Instructor: The Professional Ski Instructors of America and the American Association of Snowboard Instructors (PSIA & AASI)
AR has partnered with these organizations and their trainers to provide the very best in outdoor skills credentialing. By working closely together, we have created unique representations of these offerings to emphasize a fundamental approach to working with individuals with substance use disorders.
These will be small-group offerings and scheduled first-come, first serve throughout the fall of 2017 and spring of 2018
Costs will vary dependent on the partnering organization’s scale.
